Aimee Mell has directed the Allegra ensemble for eight years, and she feels so lucky to teach these energetic, inquisitive and bright girls! In addition to her work with SGC, Aimee serves as Artistic Director for the Seattle-based women’s choir ANCORA, which is made up of many SGC alumnae. Since 2013 she has been establishing a choral music programs in Seattle Public Schools at McClure Middle school (Queen Anne) and the Seattle World School, a culturally diverse school of students brand new to the United States from over twenty countries.
A Ph.D. Candidate in Music History at the University of Washington, Aimee also holds degrees in Music Composition (M.M., Butler University), and Music Education with a Choral Emphasis (B.M., Washington State University). Aimee has worked with middle and high school choirs for over ten years in both public and private schools, and she has taught music theory, sight-singing, composition, and music history at the high school and undergraduate levels. Since 2012 she has served on the board for the Washington State American Choral Directors Association.
As a composer, Aimee is the recipient of an MENC National Composition Award, as well as the Lilly Endowment Teacher Creativity Grant which allowed her to compose and to travel to The Gambia, Africa. In her free time she enjoys hiking, biking, kayaking, sailing, travel and downtime with her husband Jawad and Airedale Daisy.
Aimee stepped down from conducting Allegra in December 2016.
