Unsung Voices Recording Project
Seattle Girls Choir is excited to announce our upcoming recording project, Unsung Voices – SGC’s first recording project in over a decade! Under the direction of Sarra S. Doyle, Prime Voci will record a full-length studio album of choral music written exclusively by women composers in May 2025 at Holy Rosary Church in West Seattle. The project will culminate with the album release and concert on June 14th, 2025.
Unsung Voices will feature choral works written exclusively by women, such as O Star of Strength by Jessica French (commissioned by Seattle Girls Choir in 2022), Its Motion Keeps by Caroline Shaw, and Non Nobis, Domine by Rosephanye Powell.
New commission: We are especially excited to announce that we are commissioning a new work by choral composer, conductor, and music educator Joan Szymko for this project! Szymko will work with Prime Voci in the fall to select a text for the composition that reflects the values of SGC and Unsung Voices, and she will complete the work in early 2025.
Why Unsung Voices?
This project raises the visibility of women composers throughout history, delivers high-quality music education for girls and nonbinary choristers, and builds their sense of belonging in the choral arts. Unsung Voices also ties directly to our Strategic Plan 2023-2026, which calls on SGC to diversify repertoire beyond the “traditional” choral canon, and to cultivate an authentically diverse and inclusive environment where all choir members thrive.
Funding Need
Our goal is to raise $15,000 by the end of September to ensure we can fund the full recording project – including the new Szymko commission. Gifts of ALL sizes will help us reach our fundraising goal!
- Ten $200 gifts would fund our album licensing and printing costs
- Two $500 gifts would fund our professional instrumentalists
- Two $1,000 gifts would fund rental costs for 3 recording sessions at Holy Rosary
- Two $2,500 gifts would fund our audio and video recording engineer
- A gift of $5,000 would fund the commission of the new Joan Szymko composition
- Gifts of ALL sizes help fund our SGC faculty time spent on the project!
