The gift of the summer day camp transformed my musical journey in more ways that I can explain. I am so grateful to my Aunt Jenn, Grandma Liz, and my family for supporting me through the last eight with Seattle Girls Choir. While growing with SGC I also learned piano, violin, composing, and translating music between instruments. I believe my early years with SGC helped encourage a strong work ethic in my musicianship and performance skills. There are several aspects of SGC that have influenced my life and how I wish to approach the world. I have experienced great skill growth, nuanced degrees of community, and opportunities for creativity.
I can point back to a single moment in Allegra where Sarra, my parents, and I had a real heart to heart about my dedication to choir. That conversation sparked a determination in me to devote more effort and really make choir a priority in my life. That self-made decision was a turning point in my development. I got better at advocating for feedback on areas of opportunity for growth. I dived in deeper on music theory to really understand the content which only enhanced the music education I was getting from school.
The tools I am now equipped with to take with me to college will last a lifetime. I know this because when I performed my audition to get into AMDA (my first choice school) in LA I was armed with a healthy understanding of the audition process which reduced my anxiety, I had the skills to put my best voice forward, and I received my acceptance the summer before my junior year of high school. The development I experienced at SGC literally led me straight to my future.
Besides showing up for my fellow choristers and directors with a strong work ethic, I truly have a love for the sense of community at SGC. I’ll never forget my first SGC camp and my camp sibling Izzy Woods. We shared a passion for the craft that had us talking with each other that whole week. She made me feel welcomed, seen, heard, and that I mattered.
SGC has developed new exciting ways to celebrate us choristers and has increased opportunities for us to experience new ways of singing and performing. Singing with the orchestra for Nutcracker was an incredible experience that I will never forget. Going on tour to London, singing with Aurora Nova, experiencing a church choir service, and singing in the Eisteddfod in Llangollen, Wales broadened my horizons in ways I never imagined having never been out of the country before. I will never get the beauty of those places out of my mind.
Busking with Sorella, singing in competition, and performing on the holiday cruise ship really appealed to my drive to bring music and performance to people everywhere. I am overwhelmed with joy for the guidance and opportunity for Sorella to sing an original song I wrote. I am over the moon that I am concluding my journey with an SGC album we recorded and I take a sense with me of the kind of performer I want to be.
In conclusion, SGC has taught me that great leadership among peers and students has to come with equity and inclusion. It has to come with humility and understanding for working with a wide variety of talented personalities. Not only am I taking the skills I’ve developed here with me to college to be a dedicated performer and storyteller, but also a teacher and peer that works to bring people together. Together as a community, we can learn to celebrate our differences and embrace our joined spirits and song.
Thank you Seattle Girls Choir for an amazing adventure and I am so excited for what the future holds not only for myself, but all of my fellow seniors!
