Placement Audition Requirements

Thanks for your interest in joining Seattle Girls Choir! If you would like to request an audition, please fill out our Placement Audition Request Form.
Students in 4th-6th grade with little or no choral experience will be able to audition to join with a January 2025 start date. Auditions will be held on January 4, 2025.
Students in 2nd, 3rd, and 7th-11th grade will be able to audition to join with a September 2025 start date. Auditions will be held on June 7, 2025.
We also encourage you to watch our website for Summer Music Day Camp options and registrations coming soon.
Placement auditions allow us to get acquainted with each candidate and their family! They offer us a chance to hear the candidate’s voice, ability to match pitch, make adjustments to given instructions, and determine potential placement in our program. Auditions are lowkey and offered in a super supportive and positive environment! They last approximately 15 minutes.

Each candidate will be asked to:

  • Match single pitches and pitches within chords. Being able to hear a note and sing it back is critical in our audition process and evaluation.
  • Echo clapped rhythmic patterns.
  • Sing the first verse of  “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” or Row, Row, Row Your Boat with piano accompaniment (provided by us).
  • Sing a song of their choice.  This song doesn’t need to be complicated — we simply want to hear something the student enjoys that demonstrates her voice. The song can be from a musical, a hymn, a folk song, something from a movie, from school, an art song, or a lighter pop song. We look for potential, rather than polished performances!

2nd – 3rd Grade

Dolcine

4th-7th grade with little or no previous choral training

Entrata: this choir level serves as an entry point for 4th-7th graders and is designed to build choristers’ vocal and musical skills before moving into a different choir level the following season.

5th-6th grade with previous choral training

Allegra: children entering 5-6th grade with choral experience may also be asked to demonstrate a knowledge of music theory (staff note names, rhythmic values, etc) and/or some proficiency in sight-singing for consideration in our Allegra level.

7th-12th grade with previous choral training

Cantamus, Prime Voci, or Sorella: Students in 7th-12th grade who are prepared to demonstrate their music theory knowledge, sight-singing ability, and aural skills will have a 30 minute audition appointment. This is to better evaluate a candidate’s potential fit in our higher level choirs where choristers have more tenure with the program’s instruction.
